Why Your Money Mindset is Holding You Back

In this article, I’m going to discuss how your money mindset is holding you back and share with you the stories that have helped me process the way I view money and how I am working to build positive and healthy mindsets.

Recently, I was on a trip visiting my family and to save money I decided to stay with my parents. As much as I love my family, I was really jetlagged from my trip. The time difference was about three hours. In addition to that, I was in the process of trying to find a new apartment and preparing to sell our house. That previous week my husband and I had been commuting over two + hours one way between his new job and my apartment hunting. Needless to say I was drained and wanted some time to relax while visiting family.

During my stay, my family was celebrating a major family accomplishment, my sister’s graduation. Because I’m a big sister I wanted to make sure everything was went well so I did my best to take care of my family’s needs by cooking breakfast and spending some quality time with my other siblings and parents.

When it came down to it though, I was exhausted. I needed some space to unwind.

I ended up talking with my husband about my frustrations about feeling tired and how it was starting to show in the way I communicated.

My husband ended up saying that he understood why I felt the way I did and asked me why I wouldn’t’ consider a hotel. I told him the reason was because I was trying to save money.

And basically at that point I had a come to Jesus moment. He said something that really hit home. He basically said that the choice to get a hotel or rent a car were up to me and I was choosing to either stay with my family and continue how I was feeling or choose to get a hotel and get the rest I wanted.

Everything came down to my choice.

I think in that moment it dawned on me that I was using frugality as a way to avoid doing something for myself. It was a good lesson because I think what I needed was to determine. Because of our financial situation, I had saved money aside for cases like this and I started to reflect on what I could have done differently.

So I decided to get the hotel and found a discounted place for the night. I didn’t know it then but booking that hotel ticket was the key to changing my money mindset. The next morning, I got an email saying that my flight had been canceled and that the next flight wouldn’t be for another day, which wasn’t going to work because I had several appointments to get to.

Because of the rest and sleep that I had, I was able to gather my thoughts and calmly handle the situation. I asked for a refund of the money, booked an earlier flight and was able to get on with my life.

So the reason why I share this with you all is that money is not good or bad, it is simply a tool and using it effectively can help us reach our goals.

Now, I’d like to share with you the four healthy money mindsets that can encourage you to reach your goals.


Remember that your internal worth is not tied to a bank account, a networth number, or a credit score. You are more than a number. You are a creative soul that is meant to live an abundant, fulfilling life. What if you truly believed that you were loved not only for your accomplishments but for who you are?


You can either choose to live by reacting to your financial situation or being proactive about the way you live and the way you want to live. Create a goal, plan backwards, and stick to that goal until you accomplish it.


Remember that all actions have consequences, both good and bad. You need to create a habit of thinking about how your actions have either helped you or hurt you. Are you using food, relationships, entertainment, or other things to avoid the things that you are scared of? If so, what can you do to create healthy boundaries and space for yourself? Instead of being reactive to your situation, how can you practice reflective?


Are you undervaluing your life by giving so much to others that you are ignoring your personal or business goals? When is the last time you’ve invested in taking care of your heart by getting the support of others? You need a supportive system of friends and colleagues. Taking the time to invest in healthy relationships that support you in your mission will help you succeed instead of burning out.
